The History
Riverwood sits on land that has been lived on, worked on, and cherished for more than 120 years. In the early 1900s, a small 600‑square‑foot cabin on the north end of the property sheltered a family of six through several harsh Trout Lake winters. Their homestead marked the first chapter in the settlement history of this land.
In 1933, during the New Deal era, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) took stewardship of the property. The CCC was a nationwide public works program created to provide jobs during the Great Depression while restoring natural landscapes across the country. Young men lived in camps, earned modest wages, and built trails, roads, bridges, fire lookouts, and park structures that still stand today. Their craftsmanship emphasized natural materials, sturdy construction, and harmony with the surrounding environment.
The CCC built a cabin on the property, and the original stone chimney still remains. The 1930s chimney is a testament to the skill and care of the workers who shaped it. Their presence left a lasting imprint on the land and contributed to the rustic character that defines the property today.
By the 1950s, the land served as a small community park for the town of Trout Lake, offering locals a place to gather, picnic, and enjoy the mountain views. In 1984, the Andersen family (of Andersen Windows) purchased the property and constructed the current Lodge and Guest House, thoughtfully enclosing the original chimney within the pavilion. Their vision blended craftsmanship with comfort, creating the foundation for the retreat guests enjoy now.
Today, Riverwood Lodge continues to honor its layered past. The scenery remains timeless, and the sense of peace that has drawn people here for over a century still welcomes every guest who arrives.
